A CT PNS scan is a non-invasive diagnostic imaging technique that uses a combination of X-Rays and processed computer technology to producehighly detailed cross-sectional (tomographic), horizontal or axial images (virtual slices) of the brain.CT scans of the brain are preferred over standard X-rays of the head since they provide more detailed information about the brain structures and tissues, thus providing more information related to injuries
How is Test Done
The test-taker lies on a sliding table which is fitted with a special cradle to hold the head still. Detectors and X-ray tubes rotate around the body when it is completely inside the scanner. The moving X-rays enable the scanner to collect different views of the brain at different angles. The X-rays absorbed by the tissues are detected by the scanner and sent to a computer which processes the signals and produces a detailed 2-D image of the brain.CT scans may be done with or without "contrast." Contrast can be taken by mouth or injected into an intravenous (IV) line and causes the brain to be seen more clearly. Contrast examinations may require the test-taker to fast for a certain span of time before the scan. The entire procedure is absolutely painless and may take about
When to Take Test
CT PNS scan can be taken to detect the presence, location, and size of cysts, abscesses, tumors and various other conditions such as swelling, fractures, abscesses, hydrocephalus (too much fluid in the ventricles) inflammation, bleeding, or any underlying signs of injury. It can also be used to investigate eye related problems evaluation of the orbital apex and cavernous sinus. The test taker should notify the doctor in case of allergies, kidney problems, diabetes or expected pregnancy well before taking the CT scan
Test Result Mean
Results of the CT PNS scan are usually ready in 1-2 hours and vary with the disorders/abnormalities of the Body. For instance, a hemorrhage absorbs X-rays and appears white on the CT scan, whereas tumors have differing appearance based on their size and density. Some tumors havecalcification that glows brightly, and others form hypodense, fluid-filled cysts.
